MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A viral video of a mom punishing her son raises parenting questions.

In the video, the mother makes her son walk around with books over his head. The son appears to be humiliated as the mother has him repeat, "I'm not going to disrespect my teacher."

Many people are praising the mom's methods, but others say it is causing emotional scars.

The mother and another person filming watch the boy as he starts crying, but they do not let him bring the books down. At one point, the person by the camera laughs.

The video has been shared more than 40,000 times and liked by 8,000 Facebook users.

"I don't think that what she did was abuse in anyway," mother of two Tamara Mccray said.

Even though many parents agree with this form of punishment, experts may not.

"Emotional abuse is more long lasting and really does more harm than physical abuse," Exchange Club Family Center Executive Director Barbara King said.

King says she isn't sure if this type of punishment fits the crime, and that discipline directly connected to the infraction is always best.

But parents are saying, “To each, his own”

"It depends on what works for that particular child," Memphian Tamara Mccray said.
