80 percent of households without fathers in some Memphis areas
(WMC) - In some parts of Memphis, more than 80 percent of households don't have fathers. However, some groups in the area are trying to change that.
Experts say that in some Memphis neighborhoods eight out of every 10 children live in a single parent home.
This is one of the highest rates in the nation, which is why Memphis is the perfect city to host the 16th annual Fatherhood Conference.
"I've managed to get around and help me and my mother," said 19-year-old Courtney Washington, who grew up in a single parent home.
"Just being there, being there to show them who you are, sharing your fears, failures and fortune," said Meiangelo Taylor.
Taylor had two kids, from two different women at 19 years old.
He did not have a father, and he vowed to be a part of his children's lives while inspiring others at the same time.
Taylor founded Men Restoring order, attitudes and responsibility (ROAR), which is a program that calls fathers back into the home.
It is a similar mission to the National Fatherhood Convention hosted in Memphis this week.
"A child gets balance, a child gets confidence, a child get's esteem when they have the loving and nurturing support of both parents," said National Partnership for Community Leadership President Dr. Jeffery M. Johnson.
People from more than 30 states are in Memphis, participating in workshops and discussions about how to help fathers.
A father, Hill Pouncy, says that a father has to show by example much more than they show by talk and in turn help children in Memphis and beyond.
The Fatherhood Conference continues through Sunday at Hilton Memphis located at Interstate 240 and Poplar Avenue.
There are several events in Memphis designed to honor fathers and encourage their involvement.
