In the time it takes you to read this story, someone somewhere will steal a car. The non-profit group the National Insurance Crime Bureau is out with it's list of cities where your car is most likely to be stolen. Topping the list Phoenix, Arizona followed by Fresno, California, then Modesto and Stockton with Las Vegas rounding out the top five. The Memphis metropolitan area ranked 24th. There are steps you can take to prevent car theft. Many end up chopped up for parts.

"Organized criminal activity is taking place and organized rings are stealing these vehicles and cutting them up or sending them out of the country or retagging for resale to an unsuspected buyer," said Robert Bryant of the NICB.

So how likely is your car to be stolen? You can find out at the NICB's web site by plugging in your car and information about where you live. You'll instantly find out how many layers of protection they recommend, beginning with simple things like taking your keys and locking your doors. Two additional layers of warning devices can be steering wheel locks or alarms. Final layers include devices that prevent a thief from hot wiring your car like cutoff switches and fuel disablers. And there are tracking devices that tell police when a car is stolen. "We have a lot of control over our own vehicle, if we park smart, don't leave the keys in it, don't hide the keys in the car, keep the doors locked. You can prevent auto theft," said Terrance Gainer with the International Association of Chiefs of Police. You can take action to make sure your car is right where you left it.
