MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Former Memphis Police Officer Alex Cabrera is charged with two felonies related to having sex with prostitutes.
Cabrera, who has resigned from the police force, faces one count of official misconduct and one count of official oppression.
Memphis Police Association President J.D. Sewell says he believes Cabrera's charges don't fit the crime.
"Obviously it's not very good conduct of an officer or any citizen for that matter, but it sounds like they're making more of this for official oppression and misconduct," Sewell said. "It just sounds like use of services of a prostitute."
Sewell says the average citizen would receive a fine for soliciting a prostitute. At this point, it's unknown if Cabrera is accused of threatening or coercing the prostitute. Details of the indictment weren't available Sunday.
A Memphis Police Department spokesperson said in an email that the department hired Cabrera in February 2007. He resigned in October of this year, one month after authorities began investigating him as the result of a citizen complaint.
Cabrera's personnel file included one prior incident. He received a one day suspension in September for leaving his duty assignment.
