Joe Caronna captured in Jackson, Tennessee
JACKSON, TN (WMC-TV) - Joe Caronna, a Bartlett man wanted for the murder of his wife, has been captured in Jackson, Tennessee.
Authorities have been searching for him since a warrant was issued on March 8 in the murder of his wife, Tina Caronna.
Bartlett police acted on a tip received through Crime Stoppers. They worked with Jackson police and U.S. Marshals to capture Caronna shortly before 2:00 pm Wednesday at a Howard Johnson Hotel off I-40.
Authorities said Caronna barricaded himself inside the room, but was talked out after 15 minutes of negotiations.
"He was taken into custody without incident. Nobody was hurt, no weapons were fired," said Bartlett Police Lt. Rory Mack.
Caronna is currently in custody in Bartlett.
Police say they're still investigating how Caronna lived his life while on the run.
Tina Caronna was found dead with her mouth duct-taped in her Chevrolet Avalanche on October 27 of last year. Her SUV was parked on a dead-end street near Elmore Road and Summer Avenue.
The Shelby County medical examiner later ruled her death a homicide, saying Caronna died of asphyxiation.
In an interview with Action News 5 earlier this month, Bartlett Police Inspector Jeff Cox said a surveillance camera on a neighbor's house caught Joe Caronna leaving his home in his wife's vehicle the day she disappeared.
Cox said that later, presumably after the murder, Caronna was seen driving back in another car.
Cox said information with a witness in early March helped close their case.
"We have no doubt, no doubt that he's responsible," Cox said on March 10.
The arrest warrant issued for Caronna revealed he deposited a $30,000 annuity check, which included his wife's possibly forged signature, one week after she was found dead. A request to cash the annuity was sent from a fax line in Joe Caronna's office a week before her disappearance.
Caronna will appear in court Thursday morning, and Action News 5 will be there to bring you the very latest.
