MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A new grocery store is on tap for the Uptown neighborhood.

The City of Memphis and Shelby County Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is receiving a $765,000 Brownfields Cleanup Grant by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for the site at 645 Jackson Avenue, across the street from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The vacant lot is the former site of the Chism Trail Supermarket. It has been empty since the 1990s and is contaminated due to its former use, including a dry cleaner and gas station.

CRA Memphis says plans for the future site, dubbed Manassas Market, include a grocery store, pharmacy and/or housing.

“This investment helps transform a long-vacant site into a catalyst for new investment,” Memphis Mayor Paul Young said. “Cleaning up contaminated properties removes barriers to redevelopment and creates opportunities for new investment, jobs, and long-term growth that benefits the entire community.”
