IKEA asks city to revert ‘IKEA Way’ to former moniker
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - IKEA is asking the City of Memphis to scrub its name from the roadway that once led to its Memphis store, now that its Bluff City location is on the market.
The now-former Memphis IKEA, located off Germantown Parkway at 7900 IKEA Way, opened its doors in 2016.
Ahead of its grand opening, the city allowed the Swedish furniture company to rename the drive leading up to the Memphis store from “Market Plaza Drive” to “IKEA Way.”
The location permanently closed in May as “part of a strategic shift to build a more affordable, accessible, and sustainable future,” according to an IKEA spokesperson.
A filing with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development dated July 1 details a request to revert IKEA Way back to “Market Plaza Drive.”
The reason behind the request reads: “Removal of identification of former retail location.”
The City of Memphis must still approve the name change before IKEA’s branding is removed.
The listing for 7900 IKEA Way is still on the market, but the asking price remains undisclosed.
