$5.7M in funding secured to improve I-55’s Commerce Street exit in Hernando
HERNANDO, Miss. (WMC) - One of the busiest exits off I-55 in Hernando will soon see improvements aimed at alleviating traffic congestion.
Mayor Chip Johnson announced Tuesday that Commissioner John Caldwell with the Mississippi Department of Transportation has secured $5.7 million in funding to upgrade I-55’s Commerce Street exit.
Commerce Street is the arterial roadway that runs east/west through the city’s center.
Mayor Johnson says the funding will go toward engineering costs for the long-awaited infrastructure improvement project.
MDOT is tasked with selecting the engineers to rework Exit 280.
Mayor Johnson said he will work closely with those engineers and MDOT officials as the project gets underway.
A timeline for the project has not been announced.
