FedEx submits plans to expand sorting operations at World Hub

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - FedEx wants to expand its sorting operations at its World Hub in Memphis.
An application submitted to the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development this week details the site plan for a five-story, 1.6-million-square-foot e-commerce small package sorting facility at 2753 Sprankel Avenue for a project dubbed “Hercules.”
GFT Infrastructure Inc. is listed on the application as the project engineer.
In 2024, FedEx completed “The Captain,” another sorting facility project that took ten years to finalize. If approved, Hercules would be placed south of that newly-constructed sorting facility, replacing an existing structure.
The two sorting facilities would then be connected with an elevated bridge, according to the preliminary site plans.
The principal engineer at GFT told the local planning board in a “letter of intent” that Hercules would accommodate a state-of-the-art automated sort system, which is being designed under a separate contract with FedEx.
The facility’s final design will be submitted to the local planning board for review in June.
