5 teens, 3 adults arrested after gun exchange leads to shooting
COVINGTON, Tenn. (WMC) - The Covington Police Department has made eight arrests in connection with a weekend shooting that left three minors injured.
Police say five teenagers, two of their parents, and one adult have been charged after an orchestrated gun exchange turned violent in the North Subs area on Saturday, December 13.
Officers were dispatched to Baptist Memorial Hospital - Tipton around 4:30 p.m. after three minors showed up with gunshot wounds. Police say all three suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators determined the shooting happened in the 1800 block of Wooten Street, located off Highway 51.
Police say several minors were involved in a “planned firearm transaction” when a dispute arose and escalated into an exchange of gunfire.
Markevious Nelson, 23, is charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony, vandalism, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Police also charged five teenagers:
- A Covington 17-year-old with facilitation of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment
- A Covington 15-year-old, 13-year-old, and a Drummonds 15-year-old with aggravated assault, vandalism, and reckless endangerment
- And a Millington 17-year-old with aggravated assault, vandalism, reckless endangerment and tampering with evidence.
Police say two of the minors were already on house arrest with ankle monitors. As a result, two parents were arrested and charged with violation of a juvenile court order: 58-year-old Tammy Poole of Drummonds, and 35-year-old Vanquita Taylor of Covington.
Nelson remains in the Tipton County Jail ahead of his arraignment.
