MSCS holds ribbon-cutting for Real Time Safety Center
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Memphis-Shelby County Schools officials held a ribbon-cutting Thursday morning, celebrating the first-of-its-kind Real Time Safety Center.
According to the school district, the center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and staffed by 20 people and one supervisor.
Interim Superintendent, Dr. Roderick Richmond, said the center is at the old Alton Elementary School building and serves as an example of how the district can repurpose old buildings.

“Student safety is not an option, but it is essential. When students feel protected and supported, they can focus on what truly matters: learning, growing, and preparing for a bright future,” said Richmond.
He said MSCS has taken a big leap forward in prioritizing the safety and well-being of students with this investment.
“We know seconds matter when things occur that’s life-threatening, right? And we looked at all the other incidents in schools in a lapse of time, and we strategically got together, came up with the plan,” said Carolyn Jackson, the interim chief of Safety and Security.
Inside the center in South Memphis, there is more than just a room with cameras and monitors.
It also has a simulation room. giving officers the chance to train in different emergency situations, according to the district.

With this type of training available and monitoring the schools through the center, Richmond said it allows the district to respond faster and make more accurate decisions.
“It will allow us to respond faster to potential threats or emergencies, reducing officer response times significantly. It strengthens our ability to assist with investigations, providing accurate, real-time data and high-quality video resources,” said Richmond.
Back in 2023, over $17 million was committed to security upgrades, including new cameras. Right now, MSCS said upgrades at over 50% of its schools are completed.
