68–year-old paraglider dies after crashing into mountains, officials say
HONOLULU (KHNL/Gray News) – A paraglider in Hawaii died Monday after he crashed into the mountains in East Oahu.
The Honolulu Fire Department said they received a call from someone around 2:18 p.m. The caller reported a paraglider was stuck on a mountain about 150 yards above Kalanianaole Highway.
First responders arrived at the Makapuu Ridge area in Waimanalo at around 2:30 p.m. and began climbing the mountain.
They said they learned a 68-year-old male paraglider had crashed into the mountain near the launch site before rolling down about 20 feet.
The fire department said the paraglider was then found without a pulse and not breathing around 3:15 p.m.
The paraglider was airlifted to a nearby landing zone at Sandy Beach, where EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the victim nor the cause of the crash.
