Trooper assigned to Memphis Safe Task Force shoots at driver following pursuit; TBI investigates
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been assigned to a case involving a THP trooper who fired shots during a traffic stop early Wednesday morning.
According to THP, around 4:30 a.m., a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper assigned to the Memphis Safe Task Force, initiated a traffic stop in the area of Raleigh-Millington and Gibbs Parkway involving a single vehicle. The driver sped away during the stop, and a pursuit followed.
The vehicle subsequently crashed; as law enforcement approached the car, the trooper perceived a threat and discharged his weapon.
A passenger was injured as a result and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. The passenger was conscious and alert when transported.
As part of standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting in Tennessee, the TBI has been requested to conduct an investigation into the incident.
