MPD’s Downtown Command Center will operate during St. Jude Marathon for the first time
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) -According to the Memphis Police Department, the Downtown Command Center will operate during the St. Jude Memphis Marathon for the first time.
MPD said it allows officers a brand-new, real-time view of public safety, with more than 22,000 runners and 30,000 spectators on city streets.
Law enforcement said the technology and coordinated monitoring will make the marathon “safer, smoother, and one to remember.”

“A little over 300 plus cameras that are in the area, we’re going to be monitoring those cameras. We also have real-time monitoring communications, such as radios and things of that nature. So, we’re going to be working together with our city partners and other emergency services as well,” said Lt. Delwan Waller with the Memphis Police Department.
The Downtown Command Center is off BB King Boulevard, where the St. Jude Marathon starts. MPD said they will have at least five members inside helping keep the community safe.

“We’re going to be looking for things such as: Is there anyone who needs help, such as a runner who may be having issues? We’re going to be looking for anything that may present a danger to the event itself,” said Waller.
Waller said the department is committed to providing a safe environment for everyone.
