ALCORN CO., Miss. (WMC) - A student’s grandfather is accused of bringing a gun to campus on Monday morning.

School officials say the man showed up to Alcorn Central campus to visit his grandson, but was not authorized to do so.

A school resource officer approached the man in the parking lot before he could walk inside, and a struggle happened which led to the man pulling out a gun.

The SRO was able to detain the man before more law enforcement officers could arrive.

The grandfather was arrested and taken to Alcorn County Jail.

On Tuesday, Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as 74-year-old Gerry Whitehurst.

He’s charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault on an officer.
