The family said the 84-year-old was diagnosed with Parkinson’s syndrome in 2013. In April of this year, his diagnosis changed to supranuclear palsy (PSP), a neurological disorder.

“We believe in the power of prayer, and we are grateful for the overwhelming outreach and prayers of the faithful,” Jackson’s son and family spokesperson, Yusef Jackson, said. “Our father is alert and continues to share his vision for churches and pastors to come together and reduce malnutrition during this period. He is enlisting 2,000 churches and pastors to distribute 2,000 baskets of food, to feed four million families this season.”

The Jackson family also said they were grateful for the dedicated medical team at Northwestern Memorial and extended that appreciation to all of the people who have offered kind messages and prayers as Jesse Jackson recovers.

Jackson was originally hospitalized last Wednesday, the family said in a release.

The family said it will provide more updates on his recovery.
