Former Shelby County Commissioner Julian Bolton dies at age 75

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The family of former Shelby County Commissioner Julian Bolton confirmed he passed away, leaving a lasting legacy of public service to the Memphis community.

Bolton was a fixture on the Shelby County Commission, serving his constituents for more than two decades.

His family provided a statement to Action News 5 on Monday evening:

With profound sorrow, the City of Memphis and Shelby County community mourn the passing of Julian T. Bolton, Esq., a trailblazing attorney, civil rights advocate, and longtime public servant, who passed away on August 4, 2025, at the age of 75.
Born on October 28, 1949, Julian Taylor Bolton was a native Memphian whose family was among the first settlers in the Klondike neighborhood in the early 1900s. His commitment to Memphis and its people began early and never wavered. After returning to the city in 1967 to attend Rhodes College, Bolton became active in the civil rights movement and marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., shaping his lifelong dedication to justice, equity, and community leadership.
Mr. Bolton held office in the Shelby County Commission for 24 years. Known for his powerful intellect, compassion, and tenacity, he used his time on the Commission to champion policies that advanced equity, civil rights, and economic opportunity for all.
In addition to his service as a commissioner, Julian Bolton was a respected attorney who practiced law for decades before retiring in 2024. His legal career was distinguished by his dedication to representing those often overlooked and unheard. Whether in the courtroom or the community, he brought clarity, courage, and integrity to every endeavor.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce Walker Bolton, their three children, grandchildren, and an extended family of friends, mentees, and colleagues who were touched by his leadership, wisdom, and warmth.
In his own words, Julian Bolton once said: “I miss public service. I know this city and its people. I desire to serve them further and cannot think of a more fitting or productive way than through public office.” That desire never left him and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
In recent years, Bolton became a mentor to Memphis City Councilman JB Smiley, guiding him through politics in Memphis and statewide in Tennessee. Smiley made a run for governor in 2022.
