1 dead, 4 injured after apartment fire, MFD says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - One person is dead and four other people are injured after an apartment fire on Saturday night, according to the Memphis Fire Department.

Just after 11:30 p.m., the Memphis Fire Department responded to a multi-family residential fire at Northlake Apartments, located at 3777 Epworth.

MFD says it was a heavy fire that resulted in about 20 people being evacuated.

About half were able to exit with assistance, while at least five others had to be physically carried out, some found unconscious.

Five people were taken to the hospital, two in critical, two in non-critical, and one person died on the scene.

James Johnson lives down the block and said he could not believe what he saw.

“This lady I talked to this morning said she had to crawl out of the window and I know she is older than me so it is just terrible,” Johnson said.

He added everyone in that neighborhood is older than 62 so this could not have happened in a worse place.

“That is our nightmare over here, if a fire starts we get trapped in there and you can’t move, I just hate this situation,” Johnson said.

The cause of the fire came from an electrical malfunction, according to MFD.

No firefighters were injured.

MFD says over $450,000 worth was lost in the fire.
