Mid-South car dealership pledges to keep prices for now as auto industry preps for tariffs
COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. (WMC) - Landers Auto Group is pledging to customers that they will not be marking up prices for in-stock vehicles and parts as the Trump administration’s auto tariff plans shake up the auto manufacturing industry.
Landers President Kent Ritchey says they want to do right by their customers who may be concerned that new cars will become less affordable under a 25% tariff on auto imports.
“We just thought it was the right thing to do to ensure those customers that this is the price, this is what they’re going to pay, and there’s no uncertainty about it,” says Ritchey.
Landers is also pledging to honor all existing vehicle orders at pre-tariff prices, as well as parts and service orders.
University of Memphis associate professor and international trade expert Dr. Frances Fabian says Landers Auto Group’s move is a good strategic plan, and she expects other dealerships will follow suit to keep prices competitive in the short term.
“I think a savvy approach is to keep a lid on the price inflation in the short term, so that you can best serve customers,” says Dr. Fabian.
Dr. Fabian warns that the impact of the tariffs is still not certain, but nearly all U.S. auto manufacturers rely on imports for their supply chain, and the added cost will affect new car prices.
Car dealers and economy experts agree that now is the time to buy a car before prices go up, and used car sales are also on the upswing.
