Tenn. congressman takes questions from Memphians over concerns about Trump admin.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen (D-Memphis) held an in-person town hall event Tuesday night to answer questions about the current Trump administration.
Hundreds of people were in attendance at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church to voice their concerns.
They asked questions ranging from government shutdowns and federal budget cuts to public transportation.
One person expressed concerns over Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security benefits not being available when they retire due to the cuts.
Max Richtman, president and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, said the income tax laws need to change in order to have the wealthy “pay their fair share.”
“Why? Why is someone who is making $500,000, $800,000, millions paying the same in payroll taxes as someone who is making $168,000 or less, it’s not right,” Richtman said.
Cohen is a sponsor of multiple bills to protect Social Security benefits, including the Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act and the Keep Our Pensions Promises Act.
