Attorney contacted by hundreds of women following federal charges of East Memphis Gynecologist
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The stories of women impacted by the now federally charged gynecologist continue to come out.
Action News 5 has learned that hundreds of women are turning to an attorney, seeking legal advice after learning of the charges against East Memphis doctor Sanjeev Kumar.
It’s been exactly a week since the US Attorney’s Office announced its federal indictment against Dr. Kumar for sexually abusing patients, adulterating medical devices for reuse on patients, and healthcare fraud.
The 44-year-old faces nearly two dozen charges for crimes against women.
The 23-count indictment was unsealed February 28th, about year after his East Memphis office was raided by the FBI.
Kumar is accused of coercing women to perform illegal sex acts, reusing single-use devices on patients, and committing fraud.
Action News 5 spoke with Attorney Kayla Onder, who runs her law office’s sexual abuse department.
She says over the past two days, she’s received more than 200 calls concerning Dr. Kumar.
“We know his charges; we know what he’s accused of, and it’s one thing when you get a call from one person; it’s another thing when you get a call from 200-plus,” Onder said. “And you know that there is something there, these are women most of them don’t know each other [they] have never crossed paths, have never had any form of communication, with each other and they’re all saying the same thing [and] they all have the same stories. So it’s gonna be a lot of investigation on our end.”
Onder says many of the women she’s spoken to are fearful and want to know if their procedures were appropriate.
And while early in their investigation, Onder says they’re taking every call seriously.
“We’re assuming because they have the plaques on their walls, they have no skeletons in their closet,” she said. And I think that it’s a normal reaction, right? We’re trained to trust doctors; it’s how we’re raised- they went to school for this. They know what they’re doing they know what they’re talking about, but there are always predators sometimes in positions of power.”
The FBI wants to hear from those who think they may have been victims.
