Memphis mayor takes questions from constituents on Reddit
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Memphis Mayor Paul Young spent an hour on the popular social media platform Reddit on Monday, taking questions from constituents.
The first question was about Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA), the city’s struggling public transportation system. Mayor Young said the priority right now is to fix and update the old bus fleet and stabilize the agency’s finances.
He was asked about making the drive to and from the airport more attractive and welcoming. That’s in the works, he said, specifically mentioning a redesign of Plough Boulevard.
When asked about affordable housing in Memphis, Mayor Young said his administration is looking at changes in the tax structure so that big corporations that own dozens or hundreds of homes pay a 40% commercial tax instead of the 25% residential tax in order to generate more revenue to re-invest in neighborhoods.
