MFD offers tips on preventing space heater fires after 87-year-old man killed
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - An 87-year-old man was killed in a house fire Monday morning.
The fire happened at a home on Bowen Avenue near National Street in The Heights neighborhood.
Memphis Fire Department determined the cause of the fire to be electrical and accidental.

A neighbor told Action News 5 the fire was started by a space heater. Norma Jacome says her neighbor’s heating system was broken, so he used portable space heaters to keep warm.
Memphis Fire Department says the tips below can help prevent more accidental fires caused by space heaters:
Placement Matters: Always place space heaters on a stable, flat surface away from flammable materials like curtains, bedding, and paper. Maintain a minimum of three feet of clearance around the heater.
Choose the Right Heater: Select a space heater with safety features such as automatic shut-off if it tips over, overheat protection, and a thermostat to regulate temperature.
Plug Directly into Outlets: Never use extension cords or power strips with space heaters. Plug them directly into a wall outlet to prevent overheating.
Regular Maintenance: Keep your space heater clean by dusting it regularly and inspecting it for any signs of wear or damage. Replace faulty heaters immediately.
Supervision is Key: Never leave a space heater unattended, especially overnight. Turn it off when you leave the room or go to sleep.
