Memphis Grizzlies host events to celebrate National Mentoring Month

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - For National Mentoring Month in January, the Memphis Grizzlies are stepping into the community to highlight the importance of mentorship.

All month long the Grizzlies will host events to recognize organizations that dedicate their time to supporting young Memphians.

On Thursday, Jan. 9, the Grizzlies will host Mentoring Night during the game against the Houston Rockets.

Local mentors, mentees, and program staff will be recognized throughout the game, including a Mentor Spotlight presentation in the first quarter.

Mentors participating in the TEAMmates Mentor Recognition Program will be honored with a special pregame event in the Blues Room, and the first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive mentoring-themed t-shirts.

More than 250 mentors, mentees, staff, and community partners will attend the National Mentoring Month Awards on Thursday, Jan.16, at FedExForum.

Award winners will be announced for Mentor of the Year, Mentee of the Year, Partnership of the Year, Mentoring Advocate of the Year, Mentoring Program of the Year, and Mentoring Practitioner of the Year.

The celebration, which will recognize achievement in the mentoring community, will also include dinner and a performance by the Grizzlies Prep Boys Choir.

During the 23rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Game on Monday, Jan. 20, fans will be able to interact with mentorship program recruiters around the concourse at FedExForum as the Grizzlies face off against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Tabling will begin at 12:30 p.m. and go until the end of halftime.

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, the Grizzlies will host 50 mentors from the TEAMmates Mentor Recognition Program at Contemporary Arts Memphis for a Mentor Mixer Paint & Sip event.

The Memphis Grizzlies Foundation will also hold a Foundation Partner Appreciation Brunch on Saturday, Jan. 25, to thank school site contacts and TEAMmates provider businesses for their mentoring support.

To conclude the month, the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation will travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the National Mentoring Summit from Tuesday, Jan. 28, to Friday, Jan. 31.

Several mentoring groups from Tennessee will visit with United States senators and representatives to lobby for mentorship challenges, followed by two days of conference sessions.
