Warming centers open in Memphis ‘until further notice’
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The City of Memphis warming centers are open in preparation for the arctic blast headed our way.
Two locations are open until further notice:
- Single women and families can stay at the Hospitality Hub on 590 Washington Avenue.
- Single men and couples can stay at First Baptist Church at 200 East Parkway North.
Hospitality Hub officials say they have plenty of space for more people.
“We have a large community that’s in need here in Memphis,” Director of Operations Jessica Houari said. “They need our support, they need someone to walk alongside them in their journey out of homelessness. A lot of people have experienced a lot of trauma and might be in a space where they can’t clearly think what’s that next step I need to do. We’ll do that thinking for them.”
If you need a ride to either location, call MATA at 901-297-1680 during warming center hours.
Sack meals and blankets will be provided while supplies last.
All people are welcome. Guests must check in upon arrival, but IDs are not required.
“It’s dangerous to be outside in these temperatures,” Houari said. “It’s only getting colder this week. We’ve seen time and time again that people are suffering out there in these temperatures. It’s unsafe so we want to provide that space for them.”
