Horn Lake alderman received unemployment money while employed by city, DA says
HERNANDO, Miss. (WMC) - DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton and Mississippi State Auditor Shad White announced an indictment involving unemployment fraud on Wednesday.
Charles Roberts, a former Republican alderman in Horn Lake, was indicted for stealing funds.
Barton says Roberts was receiving unemployment benefits in 2020 while also receiving pay as an alderman.
Barton says the amount stolen was between $10,000 and $25,000.
Roberts faces up to 5 years in prison if convicted.
Roberts lost re-election in 2021.
White says $500 million in unemployment compensation fraud occurred in the state of Mississippi in similar cases to this, in which his office launched an operation to crack down on those stealing money from taxpayers.
