Is this a solution for the teacher shortage? How Arkansas is piloting ‘grow your own teacher’

WYNNE, Ark. (TODAY) - Schools across the country are in desperate need of qualified teachers. According to a 2022 study by the Annenberg Institute at Brown University, there are at least 36,000 vacant teaching positions and at least 163,000 positions being held by underqualified teachers. Providing children with well-trained educators is essential for their success.
One state has come up with an innovative solution to this very serious problem.
The state of Arkansas has developed a new program called "Grow Your Own Teacher" that allows people who live and work in areas where teachers are vitally needed to receive professional teaching licenses. Candidates earn their licenses through a mix of on-the-job training, online classes and professional development.
