SHELBY CO., Tenn. (WMC) - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department reports crime is down in unincorporated areas of the county this year.

Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner says crime in neighborhoods outside the City of Memphis and all the other municipalities is down by 22%.

Buckner attributes some of that success to deploying school resource officers (SROs) on community patrols.

“During the times schools are closed, our SROs are out patrolling in communities and inside some of our parks,” he said. “So we think adding that layer of support to our patrol deputies is also impacting our crime numbers.”

Buckner says the sheriff’s office is in talks with the Memphis Police Department and the Downtown Commission about assigning more deputies to targeted sections of Downtown Memphis.
