MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A traffic stop led to a suspect crashing into a pole on Monday.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Department pulled a man over just after midnight on Bishop Hills Drive and Shadow Bark Cove.

During the traffic stop, deputies said the suspect fought with them and ran back to his car.

Deputies say in less than a minute, he sped away and eventually crashed into a utility pole on Egypt Central Road near Grand Pyramid Drive. He landed in a ditch.

Shelby County Fire Department took the man to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

No deputies were injured.

Deputies blocked Egypt Central Road and asked drivers to use Bolen Huse Road as the alternate route.
