Man arrested after 4-year-old shot, killed in accidental shooting, police say
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A man is arrested after his 4-year-old son shot and killed himself in an accidental shooting, according to Memphis Police Department.
Vincent Gilliams is charged with criminally negligent homicide and aggravated child neglect.
On Sunday, just before 11:50 p.m. a woman called police and said her child was shot at their home on Frisco Avenue.
When MPD arrived the victim told them that she was sleeping on the couch in her living room and was woken up by a gunshot.
Gilliams told police that he was home with his girlfriend and their five children. He also said that his handgun was in his pants pocket and he decided to take off his clothes and put them on the loveseat.
He told police that he was playing a video game in the living room and heard a gunshot from behind him.
He turned around and saw his child on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head, according to the affidavit.
Officers recovered the loaded Glock 29 10mm handgun from the living room of the residence loveseat.
The 4-year-old was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital where he was treated and died from his injuries.
Gilliams is being held on a bond of $300,000 bond. He is expected to appear in court on April 10.
