Deadly double shooting reaffirms dangers of Sherwood Forest store, neighbors say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A deadly double shooting Monday afternoon at the Quick and Easy Food Mart on South Highland Street has nearby Sherwood Forest residents sounding off about crime in their neighborhood.

“We are very tired of seeing crime scene tape on the street,” said a woman who wanted to remain anonymous.

Memphis police said the shooting at the store stemmed from an argument. A man was killed and another was critically injured.

Residents we spoke with say the store has become a danger to the community.

“That’s not the only murder. There’s like five or six or more that happened at that store,” said the woman.

According to the Memphis public safety map, this year alone, Memphis police responded to a total of 151 crimes within a half-mile radius of the store, including theft, aggravated assaults, drug violations, and more. 36 of those crimes were reported within 700 feet of the business.

“Something has to be done about all this crime. We have to stop this. There’s no win-win situation when you’re taking lives,” said the Sherwood Forest resident.

Action News 5 reached out to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office about the convenience store.

In a statement, they wrote:

“At this time our office hasn’t received information about an investigation into this location by MPD, which is typically required for a place to be deemed a public nuisance. Our office collaborates closely with MPD if a location is under investigation, ensuring appropriate actions, including closure if needed.”

Meantime, neighbors said change has to come.

“Something really needs to be done. We are tired of seeing our young people laid out on that parking lot dead,” said the woman.

MPD says this is an ongoing investigation. No additional information is available.
