Teen arrested in 2023 murder of Lyft driver

(CNN) - A 15-year-old was arrested Friday in connection with the fatal shooting of a Lyft driver in July 2023.

Nasrat Ahmad Yar, 31, spent roughly 10 years serving this country before calling it home, working as an interpreter in Afghanistan for the U.S. Army Special Forces.

After the government collapsed, he and his family settled in Alexandria, Virginia.

But around midnight on July 3, he was driving for Lyft when several young suspects allegedly tried to take his car.

One of the suspects fired shots, killing Ahmad Yar, before taking off.

“And he was a man out in the United States,” said Chief Pamela Smith with the Metropolitan Police Department. “He served the country.”

On Friday, one of those suspects was arrested.

“The reckless actions of these teens cost a man’s life and shattered a family just starting out on their journey in this country,” said Assistant Chief Leslie Parsons with the Metropolitan Police Department.

A 15-year-old boy is now facing a murder charge.

It’s not yet clear if he will be charged as an adult.

Last year Ahmad Yar’s cousin, Mohammad Ahmadi said family members in Afghanistan were stunned and in disbelief.

“Peoples are in shock in my country,” Ahmadi said. “The whole family is everyone’s friends and nobody believe it when we say people’s that happens in Washington D.C.”
