SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (WMC) - A man accused of kidnapping a woman, was arrested after a police chase from Southaven into Memphis.

Elmer Smith, 37, is charged with evading arrest/vehicle pursuit, reckless endangerment, evading arrest/foot pursuit, reckless driving, disregarding traffic signal, and driving while license suspended.

Southaven Police Department received a tip around 1 p.m. on February 15 about Smith in the area of East Parkway South and Barton Street.

Police say Smith was driving a Toyota 4runner with Tennessee tags with a woman trapped inside the vehicle.

Southaven police attempted to make a traffic stop on Carolina Avenue and Main Street, but the vehicle refused to stop.

Officers pursued the man until he hit a chain link fence on Shelby Drive and Elvis Presley.

Once the vehicle crashed into the fence, the suspect got out of the car and ran eastbound on Shelby Drive but was taken into custody after a brief pursuit.

Memphis Fire Department made the scene and took Smith to Regional One Hospital in non-critical condition.
