MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A man is accused of shooting his girlfriend several times in the head and legs.

Felix Tate is charged with criminal attempted first-degree murder.

On Monday, officers responded to an armed robbery at the Nite-N-Day Food Mart on 2203 Chelsea Avenue.

When officers made the scene, a witness informed them that Tate had pistol whipped and shot a woman in the front passenger seat of his vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Tate drove away from the scene in an Oldsmobile at a high rate of speed.

Police followed and performed a traffic stop on Tate’s vehicle and detained him.

Tate told officers that the victim was his girlfriend.

Officers noticed the victim in the vehicle slumped over with a gunshot wound to her head, according to the affidavit.

Police say the woman was taken to the hospital with three gunshot wounds to the head and several gunshot wounds to her left and right leg.

Tate told police that he and the victim were inside his vehicle when they began to argue.

He then said the argument became physical before he and the victim began to fight over the gun and the weapon went off striking the woman in the leg.

Tate said he then took the gun and shot the victim in the left leg. He also admitted that he did not get the victim any medical attention but instead drove around until they got to the Nite-and-Day Mart, according to the affidavit.

Police observed video surveillance where Tate was seen hitting the victim and possibly shooting her while she sat in the front passenger seat of his vehicle.

He is expected to appear in court on Jan. 31.
