MPD: 2 dead, multiple injured after fatal crash, carjacking

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Memphis Police Department has arrested a suspect who was involved in a fatal crash after carjacking a vehicle.

Around 12:30 pm, an officer traveling westbound on Cottonwood Road saw a vehicle make an illegal u-turn in front of him and accelerate away.

The officer ran the tags and discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen and had been used in several robberies.

The stolen vehicle turned off Cottonwood, traveling northbound on Perkins Road.

As the officer approached the intersection of Perkins and Cottonwood he saw that the driver of the stolen vehicle had been involved in a three-car crash at Perkins and American Way.

Employees at two convenience stores and a witness who didn’t want to talk on camera tell us some of the people inside the car that caused the crash, tried to rob employees at this food truck on Cottonwood Road and South Perkins.

“You can’t go nowhere and make it home safely,” said witness Nichol Boyce. “Everyday it’s something going on in the city.”

Nicole Boyce was on her way to grocery shop when it all happened.

“I was in Aldi’s less than 5 minutes picking up vegetables,” said Boyce. “And that could’ve been me a the light if I decided not to go in Aldi’s that could’ve been going through the light. It happened so quick and the police were already chasing him down the street.”

One person inside the stolen vehicle fled and two other occupants remained in the stolen car. The occupant that ran from the crash scene then carjacked a victim in the area of Thousand Oaks Boulevard and Showcase.

The suspect left that scene in the stolen vehicle, ramming a squad car. Officers in the area initiated a pursuit. The suspect continued to drive, striking a vehicle at I-240 and Norris Road and a second vehicle at Millbranch Road and Shelby Drive.

The suspect fled from the carjacked vehicle in the Mill Creek Apartments where he was taken into custody. The suspect was transported to Regional One in non-critical condition from injuries he received in the crash.

One person who remained in the stolen vehicle that crashed at Perkins and American Way was pronounced dead on the scene.

The second person who remained in the stolen vehicle that crashed was transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead.

Three other people who were involved in the crash went to surrounding hospitals in non-critical condition.

The suspect has not been identified at this time.
