Driver, child injured in fiery crash with MATA bus
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A driver and a child were injured in a crash involving a MATA bus Thursday morning.
Memphis Police Department originally said the driver of the vehicle that crashed into the bus was suffering a gunshot wound; they later said the injuries were just the result of the crash.
He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. at Shelby Drive and Faronia Road. A picture from the scene shows fire and smoke damage on the side of the bus.
Officers said a male passenger and a child left the scene. The vehicle owner arrived and identified the passenger and child.
The child was taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries.
We reached out to MATA for a statement on the investigation:
“We are fully cooperating with the Memphis Police Department after a vehicle struck a MATA bus this morning. Two passengers and a MATA employee were on board with no injuries. MPD will investigate and provide any further information when available.”
