MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Dozens of Family Dollar stores remain closed in the Mid-South after thousands of rats, alive and dead, were found inside a Family Dollar Warehouse in West Memphis.

Today, the Memphis NAACP is stepping up to help families who’ve had to throw out food that may have been contaminated from the infestation.

Beginning in just a few hours, the NAACP Memphis Branch will be handing out gift cards at 588 Vance Avenue to help families repurchase food that they had to get rid of because of the family dollar rat infestation.

Federal inspection reports detail how health inspectors found live and dead rodents in areas where food was stored.

Inspectors also repeatedly noted measures to keep pests out and away from food were not always taken.

Reports of rodents go back to 2019, and now the issue has lead to a recall of products in six different states.

At today’s giveaway the NAACP will be handing out $150 gift cards. You must show a receipt in order to receive a gift card.

The giveaway begins at 9 a.m. and will continue till 5 p.m. this evening, or until gift cards run out.

Gift cards will be distributed on a first come first served basis.
