State health commissioner expects latest variant to arrive in Tennessee soon
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Mississippi now joins 16 other states across the U.S. with confirmed Omicron variant cases.
Tennessee Health Commissioner Dr. Lisa Piercey says the variant will likely show up in Tennessee in the next few weeks.
“What we do know is that vaccination is still the best protection,” said Piercey. “There are a lot of questions out there. Does the vaccine protect against the Omicron variant? We don’t know that yet. But what we do know is that vaccination is the absolute best way to protect yourself.”
Piercey says it is likely West Tennessee could report the first omicron variant in the state due to confirmed cases in Missouri and Mississippi.
