Construction on I-269, McIngvale Rd. interchange nearly complete on Hernando
HERNANDO, Miss. (WMC) - The city of Hernando is bracing for big changes as development ramps up along Highway 269.
Mayor Chip Johnson says that a new interchange into the city from I-269 is just weeks from completion.
The 1.5 mile stretch of realigned highway is a five-lane connector from Hernando to the Tennessee state line and will ease traffic on I-269, I-55, and Hernando city streets.
A new exit ramp being built there will ease years of bottleneck traffic in the heart of the city.
“It gives everybody on the east side of the interstate another route to go north if they’re going to Memphis or Southaven, or Horn Lake, instead of coming underneath the interstate Commerce exit,” said Johnson. “So, that’s the main thing is we’re going to help alleviate some traffic in our core downtown. But the other thing that’s going to happen is we’re getting ready to open an exit with almost no businesses, no houses, a wide open blank palette that’s 20 minutes from Downtown Memphis and 20 minutes from Collierville. This is probably going to be the most desirable exit for business in the entire Mid-South.”
Johnson says the project could wrap up as early as September, but the city is currently taking inquiries from interested developers and businesses.
