GALLERY: Thunderstorms, hail and power outages sweep across the Mid-South

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Car windows blown out, a semi-truck knocked over and thousands of people lost power during Monday’s severe weather in the Mid-South.

As fast as the hail rained down on the Memphis metro, WMC viewers sent us a flurry of photos and video showing what a mess Mother Nature caused.

From Southaven, Mississippi, to Whitehaven and even near Memphis International Airport hail ranging from the size of a quarter to as big as golf balls. Some smooth, some spiky pummeled the Mid-South.

Flash flooding was a real problem on the Monday afternoon commute.

Sam Cooper at Tillman was waterlogged. Cars on the always busy Poplar Avenue between Mendenhall and White Station in East Memphis looked more like boats slogging along.

And on Getwell near the Mississippi state line, wind so strong it knocked a semi over, blew out the windows of cars parked nearby and snapped a tree.

In a neighborhood not far away, they’re dealing with downed trees, punctured rooftops and damaged fences.

Around 5 p.m., the Memphis Light, Gas and Water outage map showed there were over 4,400 customers without power. That number has dwindled to 600.
