Triple homicide on New Year’s morning shocks neighbors
OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (WMC) - One man is in custody, charged with murder, in connection with a triple homicide in Olive Branch.
The shooting happened right before 2 a.m. in what neighbors describe as a quiet Olive Branch neighborhood.
Neighbors tell WMC Action News 5 they heard gunshots and came outside to find three victims lying in the middle of the intersection, next to a car.
It was a violent start to the new year for the Olive Branch neighborhood around Shiloah Cove and Jefferson Drive.
“I heard the gunshots. I thought it was fireworks,” one neighbor named Jonathan said.
“So it was just a bunch of fireworks like normal,” another neighbor who asked to remain anonymous. “And then at the very end, the last thing I heard was just 5 or 6 shots that were just pow pow pow real quick.”
Three people died in the shooting according to Olive Branch Police.
The DeSoto County Coroner released the identifies of the victims, and they are as follows:
- Tommi Lynn Carrier, a 40-year-old woman of Hernando, Miss.
- Tyler Glen Liles, 33-year-old man of Ellettsville, Ind.
- John Lennon Sutherland, a 30-year-old man of Memphis, Tenn.
Investigators have arrested 26-year-old Ivan Rodriguez and charged him with three counts of first-degree murder. Rodriquez is being held without bond.
Neighbors were happy to hear police had made an arrest.
“I’m very relieved. I’m very relieved,” one neighbor told WMC Action News 5.
“Oh it makes me feel fantastic,” John Petty said.
Olive Branch Police have not released any details of what happened leading up to the shooting.
Neighbors, including several who have lived here for many years, say the area is always very quiet and this awful crime is a horrible way to ring in 2021.
“I am absolutely shocked,” another neighbor said.
Rodriguez’s first appearance in court is scheduled for Jan. 28.
