2 TDOT contractors dead, state trooper struck in multiple-vehicle crash on I-40

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) - Two Tennessee Department of Transportation contractors are dead and a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper is in the hospital following a multiple-vehicle crash on I-40 near Arlington.

The crash happened early Wednesday just before 4 a.m.

According TDOT, the two contractors, who died at the scene, were doing scheduled work in a closed lane at the time of the crash.

THP says the men worked for A&A Safety out of Ohio. The company identified the two men Wednesday afternoon as well as a third worker who was injured in the crash.

All three men were from Kentucky. According to A&A Safety, the men were relatively new employees and have been working on the highway since July.

The injured trooper was struck while he was in his patrol vehicle, according to THP. His current condition is unknown.

SmartWay cameras showed a tractor trailer in the grassy area near mile marker 26 Wednesday morning.

TDOT has not confirmed what caused the accident.

Crews are still on the scene investigating.

One lane going westbound has reopened near the Arlington exit.
