5 Memphians die in crash with semi in Southern Illinois

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Five Memphis residents have died in a crash in Southern Illinois.

According to Illinois State Police, a Ford Expedition rear-ended a semi truck on the right side of Interstate 57 in Franklin County, Illinois around 2 p.m. Thursday.

The semi driver was OK but state police say the Expedition’s driver and four of the five passengers died in the crash.

ISP has identified the victims as Magonolia Armstrong, 80, as the driver; and passengers Coraleen Luellen, 78; Peggy Armstrong, 75; Helen Armstrong, 78; and Harold Armstrong, 75. Andrea Lesure, 59, survived the crash. All six people in the Expedition were from Memphis.

WMC Action News 5 spoke with a daughter of Peggy and Harold Armstrong. She says the other three women in the car were her dad's sisters.

She says her family is extremely close and would make the trip to Illinois very often.

She also says her mom and aunts were retired teachers and her dad was a retired mail carrier.

We have also learned one of the victims Magnolia Armstrong was a member of the WDIA Teen Town Singers.

The crash shut down the interstate for more than four hours.

The cause remains under investigation.
