Former St. Jude patient gets drafted to the Tiger Softball team
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -Lots of Memphis children dream of playing for the Memphis Tigers when they grow up, and for one little girl Thursday is draft day.
Mabry Landstreet was diagnosed with Leukemia when she was just two years old.
Now at 7-years-old, she's in remission thanks to the lifesaving work at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The University of Memphis and non-profit Team IMPACT came together to make Mabry an official member of the women's softball team.
Mabry was full of energy as she got to run around the field showing off her skills and making lifelong friends.
As a team member Mabry will get the chance to attend Tigers practices, games, team dinners, events, and more.
Her mother says this draft day means the world to Mabry.
This has been so much more than what we were expecting. To have her have these friendships and just have a love of this sport. It's been really neat to see her want to pitch, hit and actually be really good at it. We see a future for her with that as well," Jenny Landstreet said.
Head Coach Natalie Poole says spending time with Mabry helps to open her players’ eyes to what she’s been through rather than their own daily struggles.
