MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Three children are recovering at the hospital after being hit by a pickup truck outside a Frayser school Thursday.

"It was hard, a couple of kids, I saw them run completely over. It was pretty tough," said Dwayne Clark, witness.

Police say it happened around 4 o’clock in front of Cornerstone Prep on Frayser Boulevard.

The four children, ages 8 to 11, had just crossed with the help of the crossing guard. That's when a truck hit a black car and then, the children.

“An elderly gentleman driving the truck may have suffered some sort of medical issue and lost control of the truck and he wound up striking the vehicle and jumping the curb and striking the kids," said Colonel Gregory Sanders, MPD.

Clark and investigators say hitting the car helped slow it down.

“If that car hadn’t have been there it would have been a lot worse,” said Clark.

“I thank God that vehicle was there,” said Sanders.

Three children were transported by ambulance to Le Bonheur. The fourth child was not seriously injured.

The man driving the truck was also taken to the hospital.

It was a very frightening situation that could have ended much worse.

Police say they all should recover.
