Hernando woman confesses to murder of husband, turns self in
HERNANDO, MS (WMC) - A woman turned herself in for the murder of her husband, according to Hernando Police Department.
Police were notified of a homicide at about 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers said Jamie Johnson, 34, came to the police department with her mother and her pastor to turn herself in for the murder of Gregory Johnson, her husband.
She told them she sought guidance and counsel from her pastor before turning herself in.
Police went to the Johnson home and confirmed Gregory Johnson was shot and killed inside the home.
Hernando’s Police Chief says the couple had a history of domestic violence.
He said the couple was being investigated for child endangerment in a separate incident.
"Very shocked. I live right around the corner from them," said Bootsie Hill, neighbor.
Hill said people in the Nesbit trailer park, where the couple lived, did not hear a shot. However, they knew something had happened around 6 o’clock Wednesday night when they saw blue police lights.
Hernando police say Jamie Johnson went to her mother’s house, then her pastor and all three walked into police headquarters.
Hernando Police Chief Scott Worsham said Johnson seemed unemotional.
“My officers tell me, for someone who had just killed someone, she was rather calm,” said Worsham.
Chief Worsham said the couple was being investigated for child endangerment.
"There was a report that came in to us, where they had actually fastened the doors of the exterior residence with zip ties and ratchet straps to keep the kids in while they would leave and go out for the evening. So, the kids were essentially locked inside," said Worsham.
There are reports it happened more than once. The couple's children, ages 14, 13 and 10, were taken into state custody two months ago.
Hill says Gregory Johnson seemed like a nice guy.
“He was a happy, go lucky guy,” said Hill.
Jamie Johnson was taken into custody and charged with murder.
She is being held at the DeSoto County Detention Center.
