DESOTO COUNTY, MS (WMC) - A Mississippi gynecologist accused of assaulting his patients has been indicted by a grand jury.

Doctor Gregory Norwood was indicted on at least 12 counts of sexual battery Wednesday.

He turned himself into DeSoto County jail Thursday.

In September of 2018, the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure made the decision to temporarily suspend Dr. Gregory Norwood’s license.

Attorney Aaron Neglia represents some of Norwood’s victims. He released a statement Thursday night on behalf of them.

“Tonight is a great night for the numerous victims of Dr. Norwood and Baptist Medical Group. Finally, these women’s voices are heard and Baptist Memorial Group can no longer ignore complaints from their patients of being sexually battered. Dr. Norwood is in custody for at least 12 counts of sexual battery. We will not rest until Dr. Norwood and Baptist Medical Group are held accountable for their actions and inactions," said Neglia.

Norwood has since been released from jail after posting $100,000 bond.

He will return to court on April 12 at 9 a.m.
