MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Tennessee State Sen. Sara Kyle said she is not running for the U.S. Senate next year.

In December, Kyle said she was strongly considering a run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Lamar Alexander, who is retiring.

On Saturday, the Memphis Democrat, who represents the 30th Senate District, told WMC Action News 5 that while she loves meeting people and campaigning, she plans to stay in her current position, where there is a lot of work to do.

"I appreciate people who've asked me to run," Kyle said. "It's not foreign to me to do that, but I want to use my time and talents in the state senate representing Memphis at this time.”

In 1994, Kyle was elected statewide to the Tennessee Public Service Commission, which is now the Tennessee Regulatory Authority.

She was elected to the state senate in 2014 to fill the remaining term of her husband.

Kyle won a full-term in 2016.
