MARION, AR (WMC) - A Marion police officer is under investigation by the Arkansas State Police, according to Marion Police Chief Gary Kelley.

Chief Kelley said the department started an internal investigation after he was made aware of an incident involving a Marion police officer.

His statement, released Tuesday, reads:

“I was notified of an incident involving an officer within the Marion Police Department. After an internal investigation, the officer was suspended and this matter was referred to the Arkansas State Police. Because this is an ongoing criminal investigation by the State Police, I’m sure you understand there isn’t anything more that I can say at this time.”

Chief Kelley said he was notified of an incident involving a Marion police officer.

The chief said after an internal investigation, the officer was suspended. ASP is now taking over that investigation.

WMC5 went to Marion to find out more on this incident but couldn’t reach Chief Kelley or Mayor Frank Fogleman for comment.

We also tried reaching out to all of the council members, who either said "no comment" or could not be reached.

A spokesperson with Arkansas State Police said neither Arkansas law nor policies and procedures requires ASP to disclose information about an investigation that may be underway prior to a case file being submitted to the prosecuting attorney for consideration.

We’ll keep checking in on this investigation and keep you posted.
