MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Singer and songwriter Steven Tyler is using a hit Aerosmith song to help abused and neglected girls across the country, including Shelby County.

Thirty years ago, Steven Tyler wrote “Janie’s Got a Gun,” a song about abuse. In 2015, Tyler started raising money for the millions of girls represented in that song.

“We couldn’t be happier to have someone more passionate and iconic and have the voice that he does to talk about this issue of abuse and neglect in our country,” said Richard Shaw, Chief Development Officer at Youth Villages.

Three years ago, Tyler teamed up with Shelby County-based Youth Villages to create Janie's Fund. The money raised for the fund goes to help abused and neglected girls.

The first Janie’s House opened in the Atlanta area in Dec. 2017, and the second one will open next month in the Bluff City area.

“This is our hometown, this our headquarters, we always wanted to have a Janie’s House here in Memphis,” Shaw said.

The second Janie’s House will open February 4 with a scarf-cutting on Youth Villages’ Bartlett campus.

Girls – mostly pre-teens and teenagers – will get safe temporary housing there and the all-around care they need.

“Our goal is to not have those girls there a day longer than they need to be, but also while they are there receive the trauma support and really heal from the things that have happened to them,” Shaw said.

Shaw said when Janie’s House opens, all 14 beds will already be filled.

He thinks the home will serve about 30 girls a year, but while that happens, work continues to open more Janie's Houses and help more girls with Janie's Fund.

Tyler will host his second Grammy Awards Viewing Party on Sunday, Feb. 10 to benefit Janie's Fund.
